Brief History of Staccato Music

Staccato Music was started in 1981 as a music school by Carry Canninga, master trumpet player, and his wife Trudie Canniga, master pianist. They soon realized the need to supply instruments to their students after which they started the sales division of Staccato. In the years thereafter. Staccato grew in many facets to be the leading musical instrument supplier for the Garden Route and the Klein Karoo.

In 2007 Staccato was bought by the Van Der Merwe’s who gave the shop a much needed make-over and fresh new start. Staccato Music was started at the premises where they used to preside on Albert street. 30 successful years later, a bold move to relocate Staccato to it’s curent home at St. Georges Square, Knysna Road, George.

So, why the big move? Although we can testify of grace with regards to success, even in difficult financial times, we had a responsibility as business owners towards our customers, not to stagnate. For us at Staccato, we believe that this move resembled growth, moving forward and offering our valued customers the benefit of a more modern, bigger and better located shop. We used to have a 275sqm shop with very little display window. We now offer a 395sqm shop with 25m of display window. This allows us to stock a third more instruments, including bigger items such as grand pianos and many more drum kits. We enjoy spoiling our customers with choice!
This far, the response to our new shop has been great. The general reaction that we get from public is that they feel as if they are in a shop in one of the big towns. Not only are we the biggest shop in the southern cape, but we are also the best stocked with the service and expertise to back our products.
What does the future hold for staccato? Well, who knows… The industry offers so many opportunities, but for now we will keep on focusing on being the best that we can be – run by three energetic young men. Staccato is growing to be one of the stores to be reckoned with in South Africa.

Meaning of Staccato.

The Italian word STACCATO indicates that notes are separated in a detached and distinctly separate manner. The rhythm is not affected. Notes identified as staccato are often played or sung abruptly and short. Staccato is the opposite of Legato. Long and flowing notes.
